April 30th, 2008 by James

If you happen to be living in Japan this probably won’t be of any real concern to you as Japan is already year’s ahead in terms of mobile telecommunications, however you may be happy to hear that the Nokia 6124 Classic will be landing in Japan with the added support of i-mode. 2 megapixel cameras and QVGA resolution may well seem somewhat ancient, but maybe you haven’t seen the quantity of RAZRs there are still floating around.

The Nokia 6124 classic is a dual mode multimedia mobile handset which incorporates WCDMA/HSDPA 900/2100 and EDGE 850/900/1800/1900, 2 built-in cameras, being a 2 megapixel and a QVGA 240 x 320, a 16M colour display, USB 2.0, Bluetooth 2.0 EDR/A2DP, and a microSD memory card slot.

Verizon gain the Nokia 6205 stylish clamshell mobile phone

April 30th, 2008 by James

In keeping with Nokia’s mobile phone entry level push they have announced the stylishly eye catching Nokia 6205 clamshell design handset is heading for Verizon’s CDMA network. Although the Nokia 6205’s spec sheet doesn’t quite match up to some of Espoo’s more refined work the Nokia 6205’s sleek design should catch the eye of mobile phone users who are on the lookout for a little extra.

The Nokia 6205 may not be as clean and graceful as the likes of the Nokia 1606 or even the Nokia 3606, however with more features built into its slender encasing the Nokia 6205 strikes a subtle balance. The 6205 has an external display which looks to be on par with that of the Nokia 3606, while the external music controls give cause to believe the Nokia 6205 will serve extremely well as a media orientated mobile handset.

Nokia 6205

The Nokia 6205 will undoubtedly feature a camera that is more than likely to be VGA resolution, while the internal display is maybe just a tad larger than its external display. Expect the Nokia 6205 to hit Verizon sometime around mid-June, which should be just in time to become overshadowed by the arrival of the Apple 3G iPhone.

Who will be top? Wii Fit vs. Grand Theft Auto 4 (GTA IV)

April 30th, 2008 by Peter

Ok so we know how popular the release of the much anticipated game Grand Theft Auto 4 is, as many of our high streets see huge queues as people wanted to get their copy. There are so many forecasts that the game will break all records however; Bookies Paddy Power does not believe this to be the case.

The bookies do wonder if GTA IV will have the staying power in 10 weeks time, they believe that the Wii Fit from Nintendo will bump GTA IV of the top spot after just a few days. Paddy Power are now offering a 9/2 odds that GTA IV will sit at the top of the charts for 10 weeks, but they are offering odds of 6/4 that the Wii Fit will knock Grand Theft Auto 4 of the number one spot.

If the Nintendo Wii Fit does not manage to knock Rockstar’s newest game from the top of the charts then all is not lost, as Nintendo has another great game coming. The game in question is Mario Kart and the forecast for game sales look very promising.

I own a PlayStation 3 and I am still not certain if I will purchase GTA IV However; I do not own a Nintendo Wii, but that is about to change as I am eager to own Wii Fit.

mp3 alarm clock gets color video screen

April 30th, 2008 by technabob

This wouldn’t be the first time I saw an alarm clock that could play MP3 tracks, but it is the first one I’ve come across that can play movies after it wakes you up.

JWD MP4 Video Cube Media Player

JWD’s pint-sized MP3 media player has a compact 2.0-inch full-color LCD screen which can play MP4 format video clips. The tiny screen offers a 220×176 resolution, and can play clips from its internal 1GB memory or from an SD/MMC memory card. Audio can be played through headphones, or via the players built-in stereo speakers. In addition to media playback, it can tune FM radio and even lets you read e-Books (if your eyes can handle the small print).

It’s available in either white or black cube designs, and is and available from gadget importer Shop Kami for $88 USD.

April 30th, 2008 by James

Paul Otellini, CEO of Intel, while in an interview to the Wall Street Journal stated that Intel are in negotiations with all major mobile phone manufacturers with a view to installing Intel chips inside their future mobile handsets.

So what would this actually mean for ARM, well very little in the short term such as like three years, but consider what may happen when Moorestown beings shipping, and the possible handsets to follow. When the Wall Street Journal asked “You expect to get your chips into new iPhones and such?” To which Otellini answered, “All major handset manufacturers have a family of product, and they are all talking to us.”

Miniweb: new TV Key service on the Sky Digital TV platform

April 30th, 2008 by Daniel

Miniweb Interactive, a UK headquartered company that is changing the economics of the interactive TV industry, today announced the availability of its new ‘TV Key’ service on the Sky Digital TV platform, making TV Key enhanced programming available to over 8.8 million Sky users and all TV channels.

At the same time, Miniweb has also announced a content acquisition programme, aimed at providing the services required to enable advertisers, brands, channels and content owners to quickly, easily and cost-effectively launch video rich interactive applications on the Sky platform.

“Today’s launch on Sky makes TV Key functionality available to over 8.8 million TV viewers in the UK and can be used by any broadcaster or channel on Digital Satellite. It is the first step on our interactive road map,” said Ian Valentine, CEO, Miniweb Interactive. “Our mission is to change the economics of interactive TV so the industry can deliver video rich interactive services over broadband to multiple types of TV device. Through the use of on-air TV Keys and content delivered via Freefone, this new service is a more economical approach, more aligned to a broadband world, making interactive TV affordable for all broadcasters, advertisers and channel owners. These online services will seamlessly migrate to broadband enabled TV devices as they become available in the market. I urge anyone who previously saw the economics as a barrier in leveraging the power of interactive TV to get in touch.”

The TV Keys service is now delivering the economies and interactive capabilities of the web to the TV and has already gained the interest of a number of brands, channels and content owners. Miniweb expects to announce new content from household names in the coming weeks and months.

The Miniweb platform makes it easy to re-purpose and successfully deploy internet content as an enhanced TV service with continuation of channel video. Miniweb has also produced the tools and templates that make it easy and quick to design, build and publish interactive TV Sites. Miniweb’s standards based and open interactive platform enables next generation interactive 2.0 experiences through low cost author-once publishing and low cost deployment with maximum viewer reach.

TV Sites are interactive destinations that are made available to the consumer through the TV Key homepage on the Sky EPG. Sites are easy to use with a remote control and are often associated with TV programming. A specific TV Site can be accessed directly by entering a numeric shortcut known as a TV Key, which can be used as an on-screen interactive prompt and connects a viewer directly to a TV Site.

TV Keys are the best on-screen response mechanism for content owners as unlike phone numbers or web URLs, they are easily remembered and immediately usable with a remote control, as well as being free to use. Viewers of any channel can enter a TV Key at any time, by pressing ‘Interactive 0 2’ on the Sky remote.

Content or channel owners and developers looking to launch interactive applications should contact Miniweb: info@miniweb.tv or call +44 (0) 20 8232 2020

New Ghostbusters: The Video Game explained in detail

April 30th, 2008 by Peter

About two and a half years ago Terminal Reality went to game developer Sierra to show them a game they had been working on, and although they liked the game as well as the technology used Sierra asked why not do a Ghostbusters game instead as they told them that the Ghostbusters icon is the second most known icon in the world. Terminal Reality then asked Sierra if it was a good property in which they replied it is a great property.

So six month past in which time Terminal Reality were able to come up with a great tech demo to show what they wanted to do with Ghostbusters, this was done by using their infernal engine. They wrote the software for the Sony PS3 first then the Xbox 360 and finally the PC. It was easier to do the programming first on the Sony PlayStation 3 as the same model can then be used on the Xbox 360 and PC. The physics engine used for the games is called velocity, this helps to recreate scenes from the Ghostbusters movie like when slimmer is flying around the hotel which was set up for a party. So when the Ghostbusters go in the room to try and catch him the hotel room gets trashed, so users are able to do this in the game and it really works well.

The physics in the game goes one step further where you are able to smash almost anything as well as put two objects together to solve puzzles in the game.

In the game Egon has built a new proton pack but the boys do not want to be the first to try it out so they pull someone of the street which is you to try it out instead. Bill Murray, Dan Akroyd and Harold Ramis all lend their voices in the game which makes it more enjoyable. Dan Akroyd has especially worked hard in the game to make sure that they get everything right.

Ghostbusters: The Video game will be available from October 2008 on the Xbox 360, Sony PS3 and the PC, but they are also working on a Nintendo Wii and Ds version as well as on PlayStation2.

Quit gym for Nintendo Wii Fit after 5 days

April 30th, 2008 by Daniel

Five days after doing our first hands-on with the Nintendo Wii Fit, I can now report that I have quit the gym for the Wii Fit and amazing yet simple Balance Board. In the last five days, my whole family has been using the Wii Fit everyday and we have all seen improved results in not only weight, but also our core balance and this has led us to save money by leaving the gym.

The reason we choose to use Wii Fit and the Balance Board instead of the gym, is because the amount our bodies have improved in this short time, it’s amazing and something that was not expected from a games console. The Nintendo Wii has proven itself to be much more than its competitors (The Sony PS3 and Xbox 360), one example is just last night when we had a group of friends over, our Sony PS3 did not get touched and I had just purchased GTA 4 as well.

As summer is approaching I will be outside jogging, but with one hour of step, hula, muscle workouts, yoga and more, this is more than enough to burn calories, increase muscle and strength and improve our balance. If you have used the Wii Fit for a week and everyday you will know what I mean, if you have not then I suggest you go to a friend or buy the product to see how good Wii Fit really is.

This is just one story of how our gym has been replaced by a better product, although we will still jog outside. Tell us your story and experience with Nintendo’s Wii Fit. Also let me point out that our local health club/gym does not let children use the gym (only swimming), so my son and daughter are getting more exercise at home thanks to Wii Fit.
